The Show

Based on David Kirk’s children’s book of the same name, Miss Spider’s Tea Party springs to life on the stage of Akron Civic Theatre, weaving the tale of a lonely spider who just wants to have company over for tea. Sprightly dancers in pastel costumes morph into the butterflies, bees, moths, and ants that are initially afraid of Miss Spider’s sinister-seeming web and numerous legs until they get to know her and her gentle spirit. The performance’s dances owe their leaps, twirls, and hokey pokeys to choreographer James Sewell, who also composed the score.

The Company

More than 40 dancers aged 8–18 make up the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet, a nonprofit pre-professional dance company founded in 1975. Although they stage only two main shows in March and December, they perform throughout the year at holiday celebrations, local events, and international festivals.

E.J. Thomas Hall

Since 1973, The University of Akron's E.J. Thomas Hall has been the center of Akron's performing arts scene. The three-level facility, which occupies three acres of The University of Akron campus, boasts a massive, 44-ton movable ceiling that can shift to enclose the first or second levels. The position of the ceiling has a dramatic effect on the hall's volume and acoustics, so it is controlled by a computer precisely managing 27 counterweights. The hall's ability to transform from an intimate one-level performance space to a vast three-level concert hall allows it to host performances of a variety of sizes and styles by university students and faculty as well as the Akron Symphony Orchestra, the Tuesday Musical Association, the Children’s Concert Society, and the Akron Youth Symphony.
