In 1989, HBO brought in six rising standups for the 13th Annual Young Comedians Show. Among them was 24-year-old David Spade. When he took the mic, Spade unleashed such an onslaught of acidic wit and world-class deadpan that he immediately found a fan in host Dennis Miller, who helped secure him a spot on Saturday Night Live a year later. From there it wasn’t long before Spade and fellow SNL star Chris Farley began making cinematic quote factories: Tommy Boy and Black Sheep.
Spade continues rubbing elbows with his SNL cohorts today, starring alongside Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, and Rob Schneider in the Grown Ups films and recruiting Dennis Miller for Joe Dirt and its recent sequel. He’s also brought his drollness—a comedic trait offset by his boyish looks—to an Emmy-nominated role on the sitcom Just Shoot Me and to animated classics such as The Emperor’s New Groove. But not all of Spade’s accomplishments exist on screen: the comedian’s first book, the memoir Almost Interesting, is set to arrive in late 2015.
