The Scouting Report

D.C. United is no stranger to the CONCACAF Champions League. The team won it all in 1998, and reached the quarterfinal round just last year. So, the Black and Red charge into the group stage with high hopes this August, hosting matches against Jamaica’s Montego Bay United FC and Panama’s Aribe Unido and perhaps meeting new pen pals in the process. D.C. should have the firepower to advance. After all, veteran forward Alvaro Saborio has done as much before, having claimed the Champions’ Cup as a member of Costa Rica’s Saprissa in 2005.

D.C. United

As rain pummeled Foxboro Stadium on October 20, 1996, D.C. United overcame a two-goal deficit against L.A. Galaxy to claim the first-ever MLS Championship. Little did anyone know at the time, but the Black and Red had begun their reign as the league’s most dominant team.

In the decades since, D.C. United—whose name is a nod to Manchester and Leeds United—has stocked its trophy case with three more league championships, as well as three U.S. Open Cups and one CONCACAF title.
