Ever since Bing Crosby greeted the first guest to walk through its gates in 1937, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has infused SoCal summers with the rhythmic clacking of competing steeds. Over the course of its 75-year history, the track has lured fans of all ages and backgrounds with its seaside stakes, providing a battle zone for bettors and, oftentimes, a playground for the stars. The institution still attracts throngs of guests to this day; a year ago, Del Mar set a single-day attendance record on Opening Day by entertaining a crowd of more than 46,000—the same number of people that can fit inside the standard Trojan horse.
Now, as its 75th anniversary season ends, the facility closes out 2012 with a trio of eventful race days. On August 31, Ozomatli takes the Seaside Stage as part of Del Mar’s summer concert series that is free for all fans attending the races. The complimentary tunes continue with a reggae festival on Labor Day, when San Diego’s fastest dachshunds compete to represent San Diego in the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals. On Closing Day, September 5, Del Mar officially bids adieu to the 2012 season with a party in the paddock, where guests can gather amid live music, food, and beverages to debate the age-old question: which came first, the horse or the carnation horse blanket?
