What You'll Get

Concert-goers sometimes leave with a memento handed down from the stage, such as a drumstick, a set list, or a plastic baggy full of famous-person sweat. Go home happy with this deal to see Delta Spirit at Bogart’s. For $26, you get two general-admission tickets for standing room on Friday, November 16, at 8 p.m. (up to a $53.54 value, including all fees). Doors open at 7 p.m.

While working as a graphic designer in San Diego, Delta Spirit drummer Brandon Young popped out of his office at 2 a.m. to head to a convenience store. On his way, the hauntingly clear strains of song stopped him in his tracks. Heading towards the noise, he found Matthew Vasquez singing by the trolley tracks, letting the twang of his voice fill the night. The two exchanged numbers, but pursued other endeavors for the next four years. Then Young’s band broke up and he called Vasquez, who promptly threw away his record in progress, fired his band, and joined forces with bassist Jonathan Jameson. Later recruiting guitarist Will McLaren and multi-instrumental jack-of-all-trades Kelly Winrich, the group named themselves Delta Spirit after Jameson’s great uncle’s taxidermy store and began touring throughout California. Their self-titled 2012 album recently reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, continuing the group’s indie-world rise and proving the force of their Americana rock blend.

Their raucous live performances hum with energy and joy. Vasquez prowls the stage while unleashing vocals that are alternatively clear and growling, sweet and dripping with anger and desperation. Young, meanwhile, races across his drum set as he bashes out percussion, and Winrich joins in, turning to a toted-along trash can to provide impromptu beat-keeping—as in their 2008 hit “Trashcan” or their band meetings, which by law must be held in dactylic hexameter.

Peppering the evenings medley of indie rock is JEFF the Brotherhood and Fidlar. Made up of a pair of brothers—neither of whom is named Jeff—JEFF the Brotherhood adds its own punky, distortion-soaked jaunts to the night’s melodies, whereas Fidlar thrills listeners with fast-paced vocals, backed by twirling guitar.
