What You'll Get
Like most sports, roller derby exercises basic instincts to work in packs, stay ahead of competitors, and attach training wheels to less graceful feet. Witness the wonders of wheeled competition with this deal: for $14, you get two tickets to see the Des Moines Derby Dames at Jacobson Exhibition Center on Saturday, April 14, at 6 p.m. (a $28 value). The double-header event features the following bouts:
- Des Moines Derby Dames vs. Mid Iowa Rollers
- Crash Test Dolls vs. Dakota City Demolition Crew<p>
In addition to an arsenal of scuffed helmets and elbow pads, the Des Moines Derby Dames bear an intimidating win record and roster of talented derby dames. Creatively named players such as Autopsy Turvey, McFearson, and Strawberry Strangler dominate the circular flat track along with Stella Italiana, who was recently named Best Athlete in Cityview’s Best of Des Moines list for 2012. Italiana and her teammates’ recent bouts include an impressive 205–59 win over the Circle City Derby Girls and a 229–72 victory over the Chicago Outfit Shade Brigade.
As a part of the WFTDA, the Des Moines Derby Dames compete to promote athleticism, integrity, and a unified derby community. They also promote individuality by elaborating on their uniforms with body paint, striped socks, and fishnet stockings, which were once the standard garb for all formal fishing trips.
