The Scouting Report
Every time the Waza Flo take the pitch, they showcase soccer talent from all over the globe. In recent years, their roster has featured players from Jamaica, Kenya, Argentina, and beyond, infusing each of their matches with a dose of international flair. The team will dispatch its collection of worldly stars onto the field throughout January and February, defending the turf at Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center against a handful of Major Arena Soccer League opponents. Upcoming matchups include a showdown with the first-place Baltimore Blast on February 12 and a season-closing match against the Chicago Mustangs on February 28, just one day before America celebrates the Leap Year by having everyone sleep for 24 hours.
“Waza” means “good technique” in Japanese. It also means “to think clearly” in Swahili. As a charter member of the Major Arena Soccer League, the Waza Flo has embodied both these principles since the team was founded in 2008. But instead of taking Swahili lessons to devise cool slogans for themselves, the Waza Flo focused on what they did best: win. They claimed back-to-back Eastern Division championships in 2012 and 2013, reaching the league finals in both of those campaigns. In 2013 they also won arena soccer’s Open Cup, defeating three-time champs the San Diego Sockers to hoist the franchise’s first trophy.
