What You’ll Do
Breathtakingly colorful masks and papier-mâché art sculpture has long been part of the Mexican culture and are often used in celebration of Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. Dive into the rich history of this papier-mâché tradition alongside internationally acclaimed artist Diego Marcial Rios, who overviews its fascinating background before giving a demo on the craft. Once you’ve got the basics down, roll up your sleeves to create and hand-paint your own one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
- Brief Historical/Cultural lecture
Hear a brief, historical summary of the papier-mâché media during the “Spanish Conquests”. There will also be a brief account of the cultural significance of the Day of the Dead in both European and Aztec cultures.
- Handcraft a Papier-Mâché Mask
Discover how to make a piece of art influenced by Mexican culture in time for Day of the Dead celebrations. You will learn about the almost-forgotten ingredients necessary to create papier-mâché paste along with the methods of creating larger 3d structures with papier-mâché.
- Hand Paint a Wearable, Decorative Mask Suitable for a Ball or Masquerade Party
Materials will be available for attendees to hand paint a colorful and decorative mask. Paints, brushes, mask forms, stencils, feathers, and all other art materials will be available at the workshop.
