With an upbringing that mingled Cockney, Newfoundlander, and Quebecer tongues, dance-narrator and storyteller Louise Moyes developed an interest in accents and the tales they tell. In St. John’s Women, the artist highlights and complements the personas of three women from three generations in a multimedia montage. As Ashley Kapoor, Kay Haynes, and Moyes speak in video interviews of their diverse backgrounds and shared home in St. John’s, the director, choreographer, and star dances out the tales, kicking and spinning through emotions and stories of work, illness, and faith. Paula Citron of the Globe and Mail hailed St. John’s Women as “deliciously droll—[Moyes’s] witty brand of docu-dance defines the Newfoundlander’s penchant for self-deprecating humour.” Following this performance is the cultural satire My Secret Pig—a comical dance-play and cabaret about a Cockney, a Newfoundlander, and a Quebecer meeting on Duckworth Street. Throughout this piece, Moyes once again flaunts the movements and accents of each character, showcasing their thoughts and dreams of being Rockettes.
