Don’t Dress for Dinner is a tale of two Suzies: Suzanne is a married man’s girlfriend, Suzette is a cordon bleu caterer, and, for most of a plot that has comic contortions that mirror the embarrassing positions in which the characters are constantly being discovered, few characters know which is which. In this Broadway debut scripted by Marc Camoletti of Boeing-Boeing fame, Spencer Kayden plays the put-upon chef with progressively developing charisma that earned her a Tony nomination. The frilly apron she sheds and slinky dress she switches into are designed by William Ivey Long, who also received a Tony nod for his vintage-1960 designs, recreated with Mad Men-worthy attention to detail. As champagne pops, soda fizzes, and telephones ring frantically, the cast tumbles through a bawdy tale that The New Yorker describes as “light, enjoyable fare, plump with naughty jokes and nice comedic performances.”
