Chronicling the dizzying rise and fame-induced tribulations of a 1960s Motown trio, Dreamgirls has enamored audiences for more than three decades with show-stopping songs and tear-jerking drama. The curtain rises on lead singer Effie and her fellow Chicagoan bandmates Deena and Lorrell searching for their big break in New York. Soon Curtis, a smooth-talking used-car salesman, takes over as their manager and propels them toward stardom with bribery and reorganization of their dynamics. After Effie gets pushed to the sidelines in favor of Deena’s marketability, the group begins to splinter amid jealousy, infidelity, and the difficulty of conducting heated arguments in multipart harmony. When Effie becomes pregnant with Curtis’s baby, he leaves her to raise the child alone and watch Deena Jones and the Dreams rocket to stardom without her. Soulful songs such as “One Night Only” and “Listen” swell to the melodies of the ‘60s and ‘70s, tickling ears while the trio trudges toward forgiveness and redemption.

Upon its 1981 debut, Dreamgirls swept up six Tony awards and made a star out of Jennifer Holliday. Henry Krieger supplied the swinging R&B score, and Tom Eyen snagged a Tony and a Grammy for his book and lyrics. Those tunes, augmented by music mogul David Geffen, gave the original soundtrack life outside the stage, as Holliday’s riveting take on “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” became a Billboard hit. And Dreamgirls’ success continued to grow, until it eventually reached the big screen in 2006 and earned three Golden Globe Awards.
