What You’ll Do
Long before digital graphics became the norm, everything from wanted posters to grocery-store ads were created with the letterpress. During this class, printmaker Elizabeth Isakson teaches you the basics of letterpressing and shows you how to make unique prints with texture and grain that only hand-printed work can produce. After the introduction, you’ll hand-mix ink and pull your own mini posters using a mid-century letterpress and vintage wood type.
Use a Vintage Letterpress in a Pilsen Loft
At a studio in the Lacuna Artist Loft building, you’ll learn the basics of typesetting, composing, and hand-mixing ink before pulling your own prints.
Take Home Your Finished Products
You’ll choose one quote to press onto five mini posters. Elizabeth will print extras so you can trade with other group members and take home a small portfolio of their designs.
Bring a favorite beverage or two to sip on as you work.
Printer and Designer
In an industry driven by pixels, Elizabeth Isakson treasures the textured look and tactile qualities of handmade prints. After earning a BFA in printmaking and MFA in book and paper art, Elizabeth—along with her husband—founded Tandem Felix Letterpress to champion the fine art of hands-on printing. At their studio in Pilsen, they create custom prints with the use of a vintage letterpress with metal and wooden type.
