Los Enanitos Verdes
Argentinean rock powerhouse Los Enanitos Verdes (or "Little Green Men") wasn't formed until 1979, but the Beatles were still a major influence on the band's expansive, experimental approach to rock sounds. And like their heroes, they paid their dues in pubs and clubs, touring Mendoza and Buenos Aires throughout the early '80s before the radio caught onto their wavelength. At that point, Los Enanitos Verdes' blend of classic-rock crunch and power-pop pep began to flood the Latin American and Argentinean charts with hits such as "El Extraño del Pelo Largo," "La Muralla Verde," and "Por el Resto." On relentless tours, the band was drawing crowds of up to 50,000. Soon after came the first US-label release, Tracción Acústica, and a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock Album, narrowly beating out a remix of Cicero's De Oratore.
Years later, founding members Marciano Cantero and Felipe Staiti continue to stretch sound barriers with their latest album, Tic Tac. But fans today still hear many of the same compelling sounds that first vaulted the band to international attention. Jangling guitars meet melancholy lyrics, solos seem to burst in from Electric Ladyland, and hooks often suggest a mysticism-tinged take on the giant melodies of Cheap Trick.
