Founded by a husband-wife team of actors, nonprofit Encore! Theatre Arts sends soaring show tunes and emotive monologues resounding through the Tulsa community with productions of time-tested family-theater favorites. To kick off the 2011–2012 season, the cast unleashes its spooky side in the classic thriller Wait Until Dark, a Broadway hit remade into a 1967 film starring Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin, and a supporting cast of sentient violins. During the play, a trio of con men seeks a mysteriously valuable doll in the home of Susy, a blind woman dexterously played by Encore's co-founder, Mindy Barker. In the production's harrowing climax, she shuts off all her lights and attempts to hide from the sinister criminals as they creep about her house, hunting Susy, her doll, and the leftover pie they can smell cooling on the sill. The play manipulates spinal shivers with visceral lighting, spellbinding suspense, and dramatic irony.
Although Encore! Theatre Arts sells $13 tickets for seniors and students (including fees), this Groupon still offers the best deal available.
