The Scouting Report
Before their season was even two weeks old, the AquaSox received a major boost. The club’s big-league affiliate, the Seattle Mariners, infused the AquaSox roster with some of their top picks from June’s draft, including outfielder Austin Wilson and first baseman DJ Peterson. Peterson has already made his presence known, slugging a grand slam during a June 23 victory over the Hillsboro Hops. Instead of foraging pawn shops for each player’s Little League rookie card, fans can check out the up-and-comers in person throughout the rest of the 2013 season. Several games feature special ballpark promotions, such as the fifth-annual AquaSox car show on Sunday, August 4.
Originally known as the Giants, Everett’s minor-league team first triumphed atop the baseball beanstalk in 1985, when the affiliate of the San Francisco Giants won a league title just a year into its existence. In 1995, the club shed its old identity, assuming the moniker the AquaSox and finding a new MLB affiliate in its in-state cohort, the Seattle Mariners.
Like in Abbott and Costello’s iconic bobsled routines, the teams’ partnership has proven timeless. The solidarity makes itself particularly apparent in the AquaSox logo, which is the same trident insignia used by the Mariners during the 1980s—only with the prongs forming the letter “E” instead of an “M.” In 2010, the AquaSox consummated the new Mariners era by becoming Northwest League champions once again, tying a franchise record for wins in a single season with 49.
