A yearly tradition for the young performers of Evergreen City Ballet, The Nutcracker tells the timeless story of little Clara and her enchanted Christmas present. After an exhausting family celebration, Clara drifts off to sleep beneath the Christmas tree, Nutcracker in arms, unaware that an army of rodents is waiting in the wings. But her toy leaps to life, and with the help of the rest of the Yuletide trimmings, the pair defeat the vile Rat King for good. The dashing, strong-jawed hero then takes his charge on a whirlwind tour of marvelous lands as Tchaikovsky’s score sweeps and blusters like a wintry wind, dropping in on a snowflakes’ ball and paying the Sugarplum Fairy a visit in her Land of Sweets.
Performances at Lake Washington High School Performing Arts Center are especially tailored to young audiences with a truncated running time of one hour, and the other venues attract adult viewers with a stock ticker running above the stage at all times. All productions set the stage with luminous scenery, including cascading snow, a bed that magically sails across the stage, and a big winter moon casting icy light across bare branches.

“It was a very enjoyable performance in a great facility. My daughter and I enjoyed it. We had not been able to get tickets to PNW Ballet so we opted to go to Evergreen. It is not comparable, but has a charm all it's own...more youth involved and we love supporting the arts and youth. Thanks for the preview Groupon as we would go again on our own :)”
