A rash of church burnings breaks out across Alabama in the mid-1990s. A small town must question the foundations on which they have built their collective and individual lives. And a nation as a whole must confront historically prevalent societal injustices as it prepares for a new century. In New Dramatist member Marcus Gardley’s play, Every Tongue Confess, these threads weave into a blues-soaked, gospel-stirred, new-age parable that the Washingtonian hailed during its 2010 premiere, in a nod to a line of dialogue from the play, as “hotter than grits on Al Green’s chest.”

While centering on a painful national story, Gardley hones in on characters that news outlets often neglect. He sets sad scenes up against funny ones and subtle lines against outlandish ones to paint an authentic portrait of the human experience.
