The best live bands have honed their chemistry through hours spent rehearsing in the studio, improvising onstage, and playing games of MASH on the tour bus. This summer on the Unity Tour 2012, 311 and Slightly Stoopid roll through the continent with their signature trippy reggae beats mixed with spirited thrashing. The five-piece band of 311 broke out of Omaha in the mid-'90s with its blend of upstroke guitar, stadium sensibility, and optimistic lyrics rapped into the dueling microphones of vocalists S.A. Martinez and Nick Hexum. Their triple-platinum, self-titled album scored the first and second spots on the Billboard charts with the power-chorded hip-hop of “Down” and the funky bass of “All Mixed Up.”

Slightly Stoopid throws similar genre-bending beats throughout a discography that stretches back to a self-titled release in 1996. During their live sets, guitar and conga players wander fearlessly along deep grooves to stretch the track in surprising directions, like a walrus trying to shimmy into sweatpants. Opening act The Aggrolites aim to uncover the golden-era ska and reggae sounds buried beneath the '90s fuzz of the headliners in a live show they've honed over years of touring with the British and Jamaican legends they idolize.
