When Mendelssohn first performed Elijah in England in 1846, the Victorian crowds loved it. They clamored for the piece’s epic narration of miracles, famines, criminal hunts, and fiery chariots blazing across the heavens. In line with Bach, Handel, Haydn, and other masters of the popular oratorio form, Elijah balanced what Robert Battey of the Washington Post describes as “baroque pieties with romantic blood and thunder.”
And creating that thunder? A choir of 140 voices formed by members of the Masterworks of Oakville Chorus & Orchestra and the Univox Choir of Toronto. Joining them will be celebrated soloists including soprano Charlene Pauls, mezzo soprano Christina Stelmacovich, tenor Chris Fischer, and bass Daniel Hambly.
