Fiddler on the Roof
In its original run, Fiddler on the Roof won ten Tony Awards, including one for becoming the longest-running Broadway musical of all time. In what Charles Isherwood of The New York Times calls a “superb new production,” Tony-winning director Bartlett Sher offers a fresh take to this time-honored classic. Fiddler on the Roof transports viewers back to the Jewish town of Anatevka in early 20th-century Russia. When family patriarch and dairyman Tevye’s eldest daughter, Tzeitel, begs him to let her marry for love rather than the match already arranged for her, Tevye is forced to choose between his own daughter’s happiness and those beloved traditions that he holds dear.
There’s also plenty of humor to be had in Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s score, which includes indelible songs such as “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Sunrise Sunset,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” and “Tradition.” The show’s ebullience is further heightened by stunning dance from renowned choreographer Hofesh Shechter, based on the original staging by Jerome Robbins. This acclaimed production is sure to introduce a new generation to this universally adored musical.
