Into the Woods

The recipient of numerous Tony Awards upon its Broadway debut in 1987 and subsequent revival in 2002, Into the Woods marries a number of Grimm’s fairy tales with the mellifluous touch of Stephen Sondheim. Throughout the darkly comic musical, the legendary composer critiques the concept of “happily ever after,” presenting Cinderella as a bored housewife, Rapunzel on the verge of madness, and other twists on familiar characters. As these fairytale archetypes intersect and achieve their initial dreams—which prove to be unfulfilling—the story examines the selfishness, blissful ignorance, and troubled parental relationships that plague some of our most familiar childhood stories.
