Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of dual identities and Freudian psychology, Jeffrey Hatcher’s stage interpretation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde brings new complexity to the two personalities and their relationship. Many of the vestiges of the original work remain, such as the backdrop of Victorian England and the alchemical transformations of a mild-mannered scientist into his amoral alter ego. But, with a script described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “smart, tense and suspenseful,” the familiar plot takes on new life, blurring the questions of good and evil that surround the titular characters as Hyde falls in love and Jekyll conspires to obliterate his other half. In addition to portraying the peripheral characters, the limited cast shares the duty of depicting Hyde, passing around the antagonist’s cane as each actor adds a new facet to his villainous personality.
Though Firehouse Theater Company features discounted prices to seniors, military, and students, this deal still offers the best deal available for most.
