USA vs. Bulgaria
When the U.S. men’s volleyball team swoops into the Sears Centre in June, they’ll already have a good idea of where they stand in this year’s FIVB World League. That weekend, the team will clash with Bulgaria during week five of the seven-week competition. In 2012, the U.S. managed a second-place finish, but, much like singing the “Star Spangled Banner” in Pig Latin, reaching those heights again will be no easy task. This time around, they will compete in a pool that also includes a consistently competitive Bulgarian club as well as the 2013 defending champion Russians.
Celebrating its 25th edition this summer, the FIVB World League is an annual international showcase of the world’s best volleyball players. This year’s competition features the largest turnout yet—28 teams split into seven pools of four teams apiece. Each club will attempt to spike their way to the final round in Florence, Italy, this July, where the champion will be awarded a $1 million prize and the runner-up will have to eat a net made from raw pizza dough.
