Funny Girl

Iconic tunes such as “I’m the Greatest Star,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” and “People” propel Fanny Brice on her meteoric rise to fame as star of the Ziegfeld Follies—but fame is not without its costs. Jule Styne, Bob Merrill, and Isobel Lennart’s musical made a star out of Barbra Streisand and introduced the phrase “Hello, gorgeous!” into the popular lexicon.

Ragtime

Based on the novel by historical-fiction mastermind E.L. Doctorow, Ragtime immerses audiences in a kaleidoscopic portrait of America at the turn of the 20th century. The story follows the fortunes of three interconnected groups, opening with an upper-class protestant family whose members are referred to only by their place in the nuclear unit: Father, Mother, Younger Brother, and Milkman. Elsewhere, African-American ragtime player Coalhouse Walker makes his name in Harlem, while Tateh, a Jewish immigrant from Europe, strives to build his fortune with his daughter in tow.

Mamma Mia!

Sophie’s about to get married, and she wants her father to walk her down the aisle. There’s just one problem: she doesn’t know who he is. So—unbeknownst to her mother—she invites the three men who could be her dad, hoping that the truth will come out when they show up for the ceremony. What ensues is a lighthearted romp that touches on themes of love, family loyalty, and whether or not a DNA test should be on a gift registry. It all happens to the sparkling sounds of ABBA, the Swedish pop group behind such hits as “Dancing Queen,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “The Winner Takes All,” and, of course, the title track.

Saturday Night Fever

When it premiered in 1977, Saturday Night Fever turned a then-unknown John Travolta into a massive star, but he wasn’t the only contributor to the film who soared. The Bee Gees’ instantly iconic score rocketed the Gibbs brothers into the musical stratosphere and made them forever synonymous with disco. It’s only fitting, then, that this musical adaptation includes the songs that helped make the film a classic. Audiences can expect thrilling dance routines set to heartfelt hits such as “More Than a Woman,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep is Your Love,” and the incredibly bossy “You Should Be Dancing.”
