The Barber of Seville

  • The Plot: A barber proves he’s much more than that when he’s hired to help a wealthy count win the heart a maiden who’s in the custody of a diabolical doctor.
  • The Characters: the comical, boisterous Figaro; the wealthy—and lovelorn—Count Almaviva; the beautiful Rosina; and the vile Dr. Bartolo
  • The Showstopper: The opera’s most famous aria is “Largo al factotum” (“Make way for the factotum”), though Bugs Bunny fans may know it simply as “Figaro! Figaro!” The barber belts this tongue-twisting piece by way of introduction, establishing a personality at once bombastic, bold, and able.

Norma

  • The Titular Character: a Druid priestess whose secret dalliance with Pollione, a Roman leader and an enemy of Gaul, not only produces children but a murderous jealousy when he turns his attentions elsewhere.
  • The Showstopper: “Casta Diva,” a moving aria that makes a plea to the Goddess for peace despite Rome’s occupation of Gaul
  • Quotable Quote: “If I were shipwrecked, I would leave all of my other operas and try to save Norma”—Bellini discussing his works.

Florida Grand Opera

Florida Grand Opera's dedication to the details has kept patrons coming back for more than seven decades. Split between two venues in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, its world-class performances draw in tens of thousands of Florida residents each year. The box office has also logged ticket buyers from 39 states and 31 foreign countries, as well as Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Washington, DC, signaling their reputation's international reach.

As intimidating as grand opera can seem to the uninitiated, the FGO eases introductions with a lively Twitter feed, a candid Facebook wall, and even its own iPhone app, which helps newbies get up to speed on opera's lurid centuries of love, lust, murder, and suicide. The FGO's FAQ page similarly dispels common misconceptions, revealing that you may wear jeans to the opera and that wearing 3D glasses won't actually improve your experience.
