Choose from the following concerts:

“Jump, Jive an’ Wail”

Visually aided by a group of swing dancers, the Florida Orchestra flies into nostalgic renditions of big-band, boogie-woogie, and blues songs. Expect to hear the masterworks of such names as Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and Louis Prima.

“Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony”

Beginning with Wagner’s overture to The Flying Dutchman, orchestra members wield their sonic paintbrushes to depict the cursed ghost ship’s futile attempts to reach shore in the face of an angry, relentless ocean. Joining the ensemble for Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 27, celebrated pianist Orion Weiss waits patiently for the chirping of strings to die down before he swoops into his finger-twisting serenade. Mendelssohn’s Symphony no. 3, Scottish, caps off the concert with meditations on the nation’s landscape, bringing to mind rolling hillsides with thoughtfully paced string pieces and the bleats of classically trained sheep.

“Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet

In a night that combines music and theatrics, the orchestra takes a turn for the dramatic as it showcases Tchaikovsky’s overtures to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, The Tempest, and Romeo and Juliet. Before each piece, actors from the American Stage Theatre Company perform a scene from the composition’s respective play, reintroducing audiences to Shakespeare’s beloved soliloquies and love stories.

Florida Orchestra

Florida Orchestra has delighted ears across the Tampa Bay area for 44 seasons filled with time-tested masterworks and sprightly pops concerts. Created in the 1968 merger between the St. Petersburg Symphony and the Tampa Philharmonic, Florida Orchestra ties the two sides of the bay together into one musical tradition. The ensemble has continued its program of outreach ever since, which has recently included cultural exchange programs with Cuba, collaborations with local institutions, and the tradition of allowing one lucky child to sleep inside a tuba during each performance.
