The Scouting Report
Although VCU has never played at Philips Arena, Florida State has fond memories of their last visit. In 2012, the Seminoles claimed their first ACC championship on this floor by upsetting the North Carolina Tarheels, 85–82. On December 6, they’ll return to the arena with a young and extremely talented roster, including All-ACC guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes and a stellar freshman class.
On the other side of the court, the VCU Rams enter this matchup as one of college basketball’s most consistent teams. In their past six straight seasons they’ve recorded 26 wins or more, and last year, they claimed another Atlantic-10 championship en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Senior guard Melvin Johnson headlines the roster for one final season, and his uncanny ability to sink three-pointers will once again have defenders scrambling to block his shots or shoot them out of the air with remote-controlled airplanes.
