Gerard Alessandrini’s award-laden, ever-evolving musical parody has been skewering the Great White Way for more than 30 years. This year’s incarnation, Forbidden Broadway Comes Out Swinging!, takes aim at the recent trend of revival productions. Playing Michelle Williams playing Sally Bowles, Mia Gentile sings “What good is sitting through something that’s new? New shows don’t always pay. So they do Cabaret, ol’ chum; let’s bring back Cabaret!” Les Miserables’s “One Day More” becomes “One Run More,” Disney gets its due in send-ups of Aladdin and “Let It Go,” and Carter Calvert dons a terrible wig and an even worse accent to play Carrie Underwood in The Sound of Music. According to the New York Times, “even [the] imitation Liza makes you want to applaud yourself silly.” Variety put it more simply: “Anybody who got through this Broadway theater season alive deserves to see Forbidden Broadway Comes Out Swinging!”
