The Scouting Report
On May 11, the Vaqueros round out their opening weekend—which officially begins on Friday, May 9—with a match against the Liverpool Warriors, a club that hails from North Dallas despite its English moniker. To celebrate the end of the minor league club’s first weekend of official play, the Vaqueros plan to invite youth soccer associations to participate in a parade and collect gently used soccer gear, which can help start new youth leagues and keep cleats from loitering on neighborhood telephone wires.
No sports franchise can thrive without a rivalry, and that’s exactly what the Vaqueros hope to create with their May 29 tilt against Dallas City. In a matchup dubbed the DFW Cup, the teams will both establish and settle the score on the pitch, giving one club metropolitan bragging rights for the ensuing year.
Fort Worth Vaqueros
In the weeks approaching their first season in the NPSL, the Fort Worth Vaqueros called upon their emerging fanbase to cement their identity. By way of an online vote in the spring of 2014, more than 1,000 fans selected the name Vaqueros—a nod to Texas’s rich cowboy culture. Shortly after, they decided on the team’s bold logo, which places the club name above a soccer ball and under the juxtaposition of two iconic images: a cowboy hat with longhorns protruding from each side. The Vaqueros flex their passing, shooting, and dribbling skills while also aerating the turf of LaGrave Field as a member of the South Region in the 85-team National Premier Soccer League.
