The Scouting Report
The Frisco RoughRiders return to the field with a mix of old and new faces, including that of Teddy Roosevelt. No, the club hasn’t reanimated the 26th president to play first base, but it has unveiled a new logo featuring Teddy swinging for the fences. And though fans will also find a new face in first-year manager Joe Mikulik, his team still includes returning favorites such as Rangers’ Minor League MVP Joey Gallo. Ranked the Rangers’ top prospect by Baseball America and MLB.com, Gallo helped lead the RoughRiders into the playoffs last season on the strength of the Texas League’s best record.
During the home opener on April 9, fans will also get the chance to drink discounted beers courtesy of the ballpark’s Thirsty Thursday promotion, and they can stay after the final out’s recorded for a fireworks display set to baseball-themed music.
Since becoming the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers in 2003, the RoughRiders have continually replenished the Big Leagues with some of baseball’s brightest stars. The team’s alumni list speaks for itself, and it also explains why the ‘Riders contend for the postseason on an annual basis. From day one, Dr Pepper Ballpark has been the site of the team’s many successes. It has frequently been recognized as one of Minor League Baseball’s best parks, especially for its quirky features. For instance, both teams’ bullpens are nestled in amongst the stands, meaning fans sit close enough to hear a relief pitcher’s acceptance speech when he gets called into the game.
