The organizers of Catalpa NYC Music Festival have great faith in their headliners’ ability to captivate a crowd—just beyond the stripped-down, steam-powered rock of The Black Keys and superhumanly chill flow of Snoop Dogg lies a host of extraordinary distractions. There’s "The Afterburner," an arachnoid, 30-foot flamethrower built from military scrap metal with a center that houses the festival’s bravest DJs. Slightly more serene is Frisky's Church of Sham Marriages, an inflatable purple cathedral that welcomes spontaneous romantics of all stripes. And entirely quiet but full of motion is the Silent Disco Tent, where DJs transmit their dance sets through wireless headphones. Somehow, it all still leaves room on the island oasis for the High Times magazine reggae stage, Burning Man–style art installations, Taste of NYC food tents, and, of course, the music.

When Rolling Stone asked The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney which shows he was most looking forward to in a summer of headlining festivals, he quickly answered with Catalpa. He went on to say that he and his bandmate and childhood friend Dan Auerbach are "playing better than we have since 2010," when they released their triple-Grammy-winning album, Brothers. The current tour has featured tracks from the band's latest effort, El Camino, which Auerbach described to Catalpa as "more straight ahead rock and roll—raw, driving, and back to basics."

On Sunday night, Snoop Dogg revisits his seminal 1993 album Doggystyle in full. The album's original guests, including Daz Dillinger and Kurupt, will also appear live as Snoop shakes up the crowd with "Gin and Juice" and definitively explains "Who Am I (What's My Name)?"

Other artists include the Brooklyn-based inventions of TV on the Radio and the irrepressibly upbeat pop of Matt and Kim. Girl Talk's Gregg Gillis densely layers sampled beats and lyrics into a "pop collage" painted against a futuristic graphics-and-light show. On Saturday, Umphrey's McGee plays two sets in a live show that the keyboardist described to Catalpa as "malleable . . . every night is its own thing, where you never know where things are going to go."
