Riding high on their recent rankings in two national polls, the Ferris State Bulldogs sink their blades into the ice and their teeth into the competition to the delight of their rabid fan base. Back-to-back shutouts against the RPI Engineers have the ‘Dogs undefeated in the first month of the season, with head coach Bob Daniels continuing to display the sideline wizardry that has built his squad into a CCHA contender over the past two decades. Standout left-winger Kyle Bonis barrels past defenders on his way to the net, striking fear into goalies and mailmen alike with the spikes on his collar. Meanwhile, the team’s own net-minding tandem—senior Taylor Nelson and freshman CJ Motte—split time deflecting slapshots and praise from fans seated behind the tempered glass panels nearby.
The Bulldogs will need to play as slick and smooth as a field of Zamboni-polished baby oil if they are to triumph over the nationally ranked opponents on their regular-season schedule and build on a legacy that has already produced nine All-American puck slappers. With an official seating capacity of 2,493, Robert L. Ewigleben Arena packs fans into tiered seats that offer up-front views of the action or high angles from which to throw doggie treats onto the ice after impressive saves.
Ferris State University Hockey
On April 5, 2012, the Bulldogs found themselves down 1-0 in their NCAA Frozen Four semi-final match-up against Union. Undeterred, they tied the game in the second period, and ultimately won on a clutch goal late in the final period. The victory vaulted Ferris State into its first-ever National Championship game, where it ultimately fell just short of a title. Still, it was another feat added to a list of accomplishments that has been growing since the team’s first season in 1975. In that time, the Bulldogs have also earned the distinction as the nation’s first team to eclipse 30 wins, which they did in 2002-03. Much of the university’s icy success has come under the tutelage of Bob Daniels, a living legend who has coached the team since 1992 and, in the process, has earned the right to be dipped in gold the moment he retires.
