Fulcrom Point New Music Project Presents Altered States - Movie Score Concert
Since 1998, the acclaimed orchestral ensemble of the Fulcrum Point New Music Project has infiltrated Chicago’s artistic community with works of imagination, innovation, and sheer musical virtuosity. Continuing the popular “Movie Music” program, in which famed soundtracks are recreated live over projections of the original film, the project expands to a 75-member orchestra to take audiences through the dizzying, mind-expanding 1980 classic Altered States. The film, starring a fresh-faced William Hurt and a clean-shaven sensory deprivation tank, follows a professor’s explorations into new realms of the subconscious in a psychotropic journey that turns into a vivid fever dream.<p>
But what truly makes Altered States such an unforgettable head trip is the Academy Award-nominated score by Pulitzer Prize-winning classical composer John Corigliani. Savage, beautiful, transcendent, and jarring, the score mirrors director Ken Russell’s hallucinatory imagery, yet takes on a new life with the live accompaniment of Fulcrum Point. Starting with the menacing microtones of the main titles, the score soon expands into earthquakes of variegated timbre and harmonic audacity. Lush and sustained woodwind solos create aural Trojan horses, carrying merciless assaults of horns, discordant strings, racketing percussion, and howling effects portraying the hero’s mental and physical devolution into increasingly primitive states. The “Love Theme” releases tension in a sweeping bouquet of dancing flutes and cellos, while the “Final Transformation” pulses with blood-curding strings before ascending to a heavenly piano melody. This extra-sensory event coincides with composer Corigliani’s citywide 75th birthday celebration, and he is expected to be in attendance.
