Since his 1987 debut, saxophonist and all-around multi-instrumentalist Gerald Albright has churned out smooth tunes with some of pop music’s biggest stars. The Temptations, Olivia Newton-John, Ray Parker Jr., Whitney Houston, and Anita Baker all employed his polished sound, and on the Jazz Explosion tours he teamed up with musicians including Hugh Masekela and Chaka Khan. Even Bill Clinton has given him his seal of approval—at his inauguration, Albright played in the first presidential saxophone ensemble since the one John Adams paid to lull him to sleep. In recent years, Albright has been hitting the studio again, scoring Grammy nominations for 2010’s Pushing the Envelope with George Duke, 2012’s 24/7 with Norman Brown, and 2014’s Slam Dunk.
