Presenting “Collection”, a hard-driving group of contemporary dances, followed by the famous 2nd act of “Giselle.”
A defining piece of 19th-century ballet blanc, Giselle mixes the beauty of classical ballet with the early Romantic period’s penchant for folk mythology and high emotion. When Giselle discovers that the man she desires, Albrecht, is a disguised nobleman—and engaged—the young peasant flies into a frantic madness that wears out her heart. She is soon resurrected, however, by the Wilis, a group of womanly spirits who dance men to death. Giselle joins them in their hunt for prey, but comes to a crossroads when they stumble across Albrecht, lingering at her tombstone in remorse. Will she forgive her former beloved, or spirit him away to the underworld in revenge?
Giselle asks a great deal from its performers—in fact, the lead is one of most demanding roles in ballet. That’s why the Gainesville Ballet is bringing out its big guns. Aaron Smyth, seen dancing on America’s Got Talent, joins Aria Alekzander formerly of the Houston Ballet to embody Albrecht and Giselle. And they have a heck of a sonic landscape to perform within. Adolphe Adam’s score is equal parts diverse and delicate, setting the scene with Germanic waltzes before growing darker with sinister woodwind trills.
