Every generation has its song. The founding fathers had “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The hippies had “The Times They Are a-Changin’.” The mods had “My Generation,” and the punks had “Anarchy in the U.K.” But some music defies chronology as it soars across time with an immortal inertia. The anthem for millions in 1979 becomes the anthem for millions in 2013, and possibly for every year afterward. Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” is that kind of song, a rare canticle that gives inspiration to the downtrodden and heartbroken at any given moment of every day.

Gaynor was in a back brace when she recorded “I Will Survive,” overcoming spinal surgery from a stage accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She’d just lost her mother, too. The passion projected in her signature song isn’t the work of studio trickery – it’s the roar of Life kicking Death out of the house and throwing his junk on the lawn. Although almost every disco hit is laden with backup vocals, Gloria Gaynor delivered the required amount of power on a single track. Not that this came as a surprise. She was already accustomed to making disco history and would continue to do so for several more years.

At the age of 19, her 1975 hit “Never Can Say Goodbye” became the first dance song to reach No. 1, forcing Billboard to invent the Disco Action charts. When Gaynor won her Grammy in 1980 for “I Will Survive,” it was the first and only award of its kind created solely for disco. As the genre took a nosedive and every platform-shoe-dwelling goldfish went belly up in the ‘80s, Gaynor not only endured—she became an icon as her liberating smash cut kept garnering fans. Now, at 63, the gifted singer still belts her hits with aplomb to crowds who know them by heart. Although some artists tire of playing their cornerstones, Gloria cherishes her live audiences’ responses and encourages fans to share their stories of “I Will Survive’s” impact on her website.
