The Scouting Report

Though the baseball season is long, the Grand Prairie Airhogs face critical games right off the bat as the 2014 American Association of Independent Professional Baseball campaign gets underway. In their opening home stand, the AirHogs host a four-game series with the Laredo Lemurs, who have emerged as their rival in the South Division over the past two seasons. Last year, the AirHogs snatched the division from the Lemurs by a slim, 1.5-game margin in a race that wasn’t settled until the Hogs rattled off seven wins in their last ten games. But the rivalry hit its fever pitch in 2012, when the Lemurs bested the AirHogs by one game for the division title—a result more heartbreaking than being robbed of a home run by an outfielder who is wearing your childhood glove. The series showdown follows a three-game stretch against the Lincoln Saltdogs, who finished last season in third place in the Central Division.

Grand Prairie AirHogs

Keeping alive the tradition set by the legends of the original American Association—where players such as Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays once toed the batter’s box, before the league was absorbed by the professional ranks—the Grand Prairie AirHogs take the diamond to face off against rivals. As part the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, the club brought sandlot glory to their fans in 2011, when they won the Association’s championship. Mirroring the on-field excitement, the new QuikTrip Park turns each outing into a memorable shindig with a party deck, a 17,000-square-foot kids’ zone, and a pool adjacent to the outfield. Between innings, fans can fuel up at the stadium’s sports bar or leapfrog over each of the park’s 5,445 seats.
