In roller skating, as in dangling from the edge of a cliff, it's important not to let a fear of falling make you miss an opportunity to hold someone's hand. Don't leave today’s Groupon hanging with tickets to see the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls, located at Rivertown Sports in Grandville. Choose from four options:
- For $15, you get two tickets to G-Rap Attack! vs. the Hammer City Harlots and the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls All Stars vs. the Hammer City Eh! Team on Saturday, September 17, at 5 p.m. (a $30 value).
- For $15, you get two tickets to Grand Raggidy Roller Girls All Stars vs. Toronto Roller Derby and G-Rap Attack! vs. Lansing Derby Vixens on Saturday, October 22, at 5 p.m. (a $30 value).
- For $15, you get two tickets to G-Rap Attack! vs. Traverse City Toxic Cherries and the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls All Stars vs. Barry County Black Heart Maidens on Saturday, November 19, at 5 p.m. (a $30 value).
- For $15, you get two tickets to the fourth-annual beer brawl on December 10 at 5 p.m. (a $30 value).
The wheeled women of the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls attack the track with the high-intensity, full-contact roller-derby races that earned them a featured role in Drew Barrymore’s film Whip It in 2009. The colorfully costumed roller warriors, who rank No. 11 in the North Central region according to the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, circle the neon-marked lanes of the smooth, black rink to outrace opposing teams. Spectators grab a clear view of the action from the stands of the Rivertown Sports arena, studying the team’s technique and listening for Morse code messages amid the clacking skates. On December 10, New Holland Brewing and Schmotz beers sponsor the fourth-annual beer brawl, in which special teams with hand-picked rosters compete for glory, and finally settle the longstanding feud between wheat and hops. Children younger than 5 watch the games for free when accompanied by a parent or a horse with EMT training.
