Great Lakes Invitational
Later this month, four of the top programs in D-I collegiate hockey will hit the ice at Joe Louis Arena for the 51st annual Great Lakes Invitational tournament. And, for just the 13th time in history, all four of the entrants vying for the MacInnes Cup hail from Michigan.
The tournament’s lineup includes the Michigan Tech Huskies, annual hosts and ten-time victors, as well as the Michigan State Spartans, whose senior goaltender, Jake Hildebrand, earned Big Ten Player of the Year and Goaltender of the Year honors last season. Not to be outdone, the reigning-champion Michigan Wolverines boast an impressive goaltender of their own in Steve Racine. A year ago, Racine earned the tournament’s MVP award by turning away 71 of 73 pucks when they couldn’t show him the proper credentials.
