The Program

For their 2014–2015 season, the musicians of Greensboro Symphony Orchestra aurally explore the themes presented by the acclaimed AMC drama Breaking Bad. This concert focuses on Walter White’s transformation from mild-mannered chemistry teacher to cold-blooded criminal, connecting it with the evolution of classical music itself. Dmitry Sitkovetsky conducts and plays the violin, but the real character surrogate here is Maurice Ravel. The evening opens on an innocent and mournful processional from early in the composer’s career, and ends with the violent bombast of his orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

  • Ravel—Pavane for a Dead Princess: Though this stately dance composed in the Spanish tradition seems to come from personal sorrow, it doesn’t mourn any particular princess from history.
  • Shostakovich—Violin Concerto No. 1: A foreboding sadness suffuses the opening movement of this work, which later seems all the more disorienting in comparison to the almost gleeful frenzy of the finale.
  • Mussorgsky/Ravel—Pictures at an Exhibition: Meant to evoke a journey through an art museum filled with pieces bold and disturbing, Mussorgsky’s iconic piano composition was reinvented in Ravel’s masterpiece orchestration for a full symphony. Listeners may feel the same ecstasy that its composer did: “Ideas, melodies, come to me of their own accord. Like roast pigeons in the story, I gorge and gorge and over-eat myself. I can hardly manage to put it all down on paper fast enough.”

Greensboro Symphony Orchestra

The Greensboro Symphony’s mighty oak has grown from the most acornic of beginnings—its story started in the 1920s with a group of musicians at Woman's College. Over the years, the symphony has grown into a cultural cornerstone of the community, with community-outreach programs, youth-involvement events, a secret volcano headquarters, and an endowment fund.
