The Program

Paying tribute to a century of Romantic music, the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra invites the Hermitage Piano Trio—lauded by the Washington Post as “three of Russia’s most spectacular young soloists”—to perform Beethoven’s unusual concerto. Pieces by Romantic precursor Weber and Rachmaninoff, among the last great Romantics, bookend the evening. Pre-concert lectures share insight into the music before both performances, and the Thursday performance includes a post-concert question and answer session with the guest artists as well.

 • Weber—Fantasia and Rondo for Clarinet and Orchestra: The clarinet was a recent addition to the orchestra when Weber began writing for it, and it quickly became his favorite among the woodwinds. His pieces take advantage of the instrument’s remarkable range, thought by many to emulate the human singing voice through its resonant lows, crystalline highs, and guaranteed ability to annoy when played in the middle of a movie theater.
 • Beethoven—Triple Concerto: A fortunate example of royal flattery, Beethoven likely wrote the Triple Concerto to show off the talents of his teenage pupil, the Archduke Rudolph. The elegant piece weaves the violin and cello’s solo parts around the piano’s passages, creating playful melodies that placed the young aristocrat’s keyboard skills in the best light.
 • Rachmaninoff—Symphony No. 2: Shattered by the poor reception of his first symphony, Rachmaninoff slipped into a years-long depression that was only lifted through intensive hypnotherapy. He began work on his second symphony in strict secrecy to keep preemptive criticism at bay, eventually restoring his reputation with the meticulously constructed piece. Highlights include the exuberant second movement, which opens with galloping strings backed by regal peals from the horns.
