Hand to God
Tyrone has a lot of opinions—raunchy opinions—about everything from relationships to religion, and he doesn’t shy away from voicing them. But, then again, it’s pretty easy to express your uncensored self when you’re a puppet. This hard-drinking, gravel-voiced, argyle-sweatered miscreant comes to life on the left hand of Jason, a shy young man reeling from the recent death of his father. Through the “possessed” appendage, Jason’s inner thoughts find outlet, rattling his small Texas town and his family while helping him cope with his grief.
First produced Off-Broadway in 2011, Hand to God debuted on the Great White Way with an award already in tow: the Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Play. Since its Broadway debut, though, the dark comedy has racked up a few more accolades—namely five Tony Award nominations and heaps of praise for everyone from its playwright, Robert Askins, to its potty-mouthed puppet star. New York Times declares it “flat-out hilarious” and “a true tour de force,” while The New Yorker calls it “Sesame Street meets The Exorcist.”
