[title of show]
“Who says four chairs and a keyboard can’t make a Broadway musical?” That’s the question [title of show] asks—and answers—in this Tony Award–nominated show about two friends writing a musical…about two friends writing a musical. On a whim, Jeff and Hunter decide to submit to the New York Musical Theatre Festival—but they haven’t written squat yet and the deadline is in three weeks. The solution: bring in two ringers (actresses Heidi and Susan) and look for inspiration anywhere they can find it. Despite the time crunch, the formula works and the musical gets picked, quickly garnering buzz and a chance of getting staged on Broadway. But the duo’s growing insecurities have now reached gargantuan proportions, leading to infighting, an actress replacement, and a neglected keyboard player named Larry who’s tired of playing second piano.
A surprise hit when it debuted off-Broadway in 2006, [title of show] is a whip-smart sendup of behind-the-scenes theatrics interwoven with tongue-in-cheek songs including “Two Nobodies in New York,” “I Am Playing Me,” and “Nine People’s Favorite Thing.” Amid multiple nominations from the GLAAD Media Awards and the Drama League Awards, the creators and ensemble won an Obie Award and a Broadway.com Audience Choice Award. The show also earned praise from the New York Times, which called it “delectable entertainment” and “a postmodern homage to the grand tradition of backstage musicals like Babes in Arms, Kiss Me, Kate and A Chorus Line.”
