Commemorating Valentine’s Day weekend, the VIP package treats each show-going couple as royalty, starting with convenient valet parking in front of the theater. A photo op on the carpet gives lovebirds an immortal memento and a shout-out in the playbill insert provides a plausible alibi for any crime apart from breaking into the playbill-printing factory. After snagging a sweet gift and loading up on concessions, couples settle in for the latest installment of Harold Washington Cultural Center’s Broadway in Bronzeville series, which transports beloved productions such as Annie and Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity to its sweeping stage. Adapted from the novel by Fannie Hurst, Imitation of Life tells the tale of two women in the 1930s—one a widowed white woman, the other a black woman hired to be her housekeeper—and their intersecting lives through the years. Along with their daughters, the women become like a family and strike gold in the housekeeper’s family pancake recipe. John Ruffin directs a talented cast as they explore pertinent issues such as race, family, and female independence during the Depression in this textured, pulsating drama.
