Hay Fever

In Noël Coward’s 1924 comedy classic, the master of dry wit paints a portrait of the Blisses, a family with a rather peculiar idea of what it means to entertain. That might just be a result of the their deep involvement in the arts, of course: Judith puts on the airs of a retired starlet, her husband, David, is a novelist, and their two children spend much of their time exchanging bohemian dialogue. Without mentioning it to the others, each of the four has invited a guest for the weekend, and when the guests arrive, they get a crash-course in the Blisses’ many eccentricities. Following a painfully awkward dinner and a hostile game of charades, the family members each grab a guest—not the one they invited—and split off throughout the house for a dessert of flirtation. What follows is a web of rapidly changing romantic entanglements, boisterous arguments, and the realization by the guests that the Blisses play a different sort of game with each other than most families do.

Rhode Island Stage Ensemble

Artistic freedom and creative collaboration are the cornerstones of the Rhode Island Stage Ensemble. The young non-profit grew out of the pooled talents of performers, fundraisers, marketers, and designers who were all fluent in theatre, yet wary of professional theatre’s limitations. So the group carved their own path, staging everything from edgy interpretations of Shakespeare to seldom-seen plays by the likes of Wilder, inviting the community to partake along the way. Locals can get involved another way, too: through the Stage Ensemble’s Young Director Series, an annual program that pairs fledgling visionaries ages 17–23 with professional mentors to create productions for audiences other than stuffed animals.
