What You’ll Do
Like an astronaut, a beekeeper must climb into a protective suit before venturing into a world populated by foreign creatures. After donning the requisite garb, Hilary Kearney of Girl Next Door Honey takes adults and kids into the heart of a beehive. Thousands of buzzing bees fly around you as Hilary explains how these tiny, yet powerful creatures work and live.
Tour a Beehive
Local beekeeping expert Hilary Kearney takes you inside a hive, where she explains how honeybees live and work and why they’re vital to the local and global ecosystem.
Hilary leaves you with practical tips on how to keep honeybees in your own backyard.
Dress the Part
Be sure to bring gloves and wear closed-toe shoes, a long-sleeve top, and long pants. Hilary supplies all the other necessary gear.
Local Beekeeping Expert
Hilary Kearney fell in love with bees by chance. During her final year as a studio art major, Hilary bought a beginners’ beekeeping book for a friend, but ended up reading it herself. That led to a gardening group, teaching a beekeeping class, and starting Girl Next Door Honey: a business that sells raw, local honey (when it’s in season), offers beekeeping workshops, and even performs live bee removals.
