Meadow Brook Theatre’s fourth annual children’s series engages young audiences in the 500-seat auditorium with a trio of interactive, educational shows enlivened by bubbly characters. Without having to pay time-travel tolls, history buff and Broadway actor Patrick Garner transports adolescents to the turn of the 20th century, where Houdini and the Magic of Thinking Big takes place. The production spotlights the famous magician’s impossible straitjacket escapes and demonstrates how a man born a pauper can grow up to be one of the world’s most famous entertainers. During American Tales, Garner invites young ones up on stage to dress up and play as such folkloric figures as Pecos Bill, Annie Christmas, and Paul Bunyan. Popular storybook characters created by Newbery Medal–winning author Beverly Cleary come to life in Ramona Quimby, which follows the adventurous title character through the trials and triumphs of grammar school.
