One of the oldest, longest-running Christian-music festivals in the United States, the four-day Ichthus Music Festival returns to central Kentucky with a diverse lineup of 120 artists and 20 inspirational speakers prepared to direct their songs of praise skyward. On Wednesday night, Switchfoot cranks up the volume of its three guitars and digs into a lengthy catalogue including the mainstream hit “Meant to Live,” Grammy Award–winning album Hello Hurricane, and its newest record, Vice Verses. Rapper-singer Toby Mac keeps the party alive on Thursday night with his energetic blend of hip-hop, soul, and funk, as heard in the infectious track “Funky Jesus Music.” Like a lion stubbing his toe on a coffee table, industrial-metal band Red begins the song “Feed the Machine” with a mighty roar in a Friday-night set anchored by tracks from its latest release, Until We Have Faces. Headlining the final night of the festival, Chris Tomlin and his backing band get toes tapping along to the pop melodies and catchy hooks that permeate his seven-album career.
Aside from the fest’s musical jamboree, audiences can also connect on a spiritual level with a variety of guest speakers that will share their heartfelt and inspirational stories. Each narrative varies just as much as the speakers themselves, who include hip-hop artists, full-time gypsies, a 6’7” Texan, a spoken-word poet, and one of the founding members of alt-rock group Korn. The festival also includes a Global Village, tents for youth leaders and parents, and booths for food and merchandise. Visitors with tickets for the entire event also receive complimentary use of the large, onsite campground.
