What You’ll Do
A fiercely evocative artist, Dutch master Vincent van Gogh may be as famous for his personal turmoil as he is for the vibrant color and energy of his postimpressionist oil paintings. This juxtaposition of tumult and beauty is particularly pronounced in The Starry Night, which details the twinkly landscape Van Gogh saw through the window of his psychiatric unit. During this three-hour class, painter Ilsa Brittain covers some background on the masterpiece, and then shows you how to re-create the splintered moonlight and undulating silhouettes on a canvas of your own.
Know the Night
Ilsa will open the class by sharing some context on the 1889 painting, delving into how brush strokes and color decisions made it such a personal work.
No Experience Necessary
Don’t worry if you’ve never picked up a brush—Ilsa will guide you through every step.
All the materials are provided, including the paint, palettes, brushes, easels, aprons, and a 16”x20” canvas, the latter of which you’ll take home at the end of class.
Many kids have a dream job in mind, but few are as practical about achieving that goal as Ilsa Brittain. She knew she wanted to be an artist at just 4 years old, the age when she learned how to draw. That led to painting and (many years later) setting up studios in Paris, Moscow, and Kathmandu. The professional artist now has 20 years of experience under her belt, an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, and a mention in the Wild magazine as one of the school’s top graduates in 2014.
