Instant Klasick Summer Fest
Schoolboy Q: this member of the Black Hippy crew showcases beats that are stripped down and melodic, laconic rhymes that manage to be both funny and deeply personal. Pitchfork called his third album, Oxymoron, “a victory…Q shines the most when he’s able to reconcile his hustler past with his rap star present.”
Ty Dolla $ign: A multi-instrumentalist who has mastered the bass guitar, drums, guitar, and keyboard, Ty Dolla $ign took over the airwaves in 2013 with the club anthem “Paranoid,” then came right back in January in “Or Nah” with Wiz Khalifa and DJ Mustard.
Travi$ Scott: Crafting beats since he was six years old, this Houston hip-hop star found his first break when Kanye indoctrinated him into GOOD Music family’s Very G.O.O.D. Beats. Pairing his flair for backbeats with his chops as a linguist, Scott delivered 2013’s Owl Pharaoh, which scored a BET Hip Hop Awards nomination for Best Mix Tape, and his latest, 2014’s Days Before Rodeo.
Curren$y: The hip-hop star and head of the Jet Life Recordings label has appeared on popular mixtapes with Wiz Khalifa, Trinidad James, and Rick Ross and released his own albums including This Ain’t No Mixtape, Jet Files, and Pilot Talk, the last of which features Snoop Dogg and Mos Def.
The Underachievers: AK and Issa Gold comprise this Brooklyn rap duo that pays homage to both old school and psychedelic hip hop on their mixtapes and debut album, 2014’s Cellar Door: Terminus Ut Exordium.
